Energy-efficient radiant hydronic heat is a popular option for ICF homes. Hot water is circulated through PEX tubing embedded in the flooring material—usually concrete or wood. Other components include boilers, manifolds, control panels, and some type of insulated flooring.
The Barrier Insulation
The Barrier is an under the concrete or sub floor insulator/vapor barrier made with 3/8" extruded polystyrene and heavy duty 3 mil black polyethylene film laminated to both sides.
Legalett is the radiant floor system that is engineered for simplicity and convenience.
By simply using air to heat floors instead of water, Legalett Radiant Floors forever eliminate the possibility of callbacks from damaging floods, due to water leaks or possible environmental disasters from glycol spillage. Legalett also eliminates the complicated manifold assemblies that owners of hydronic (water-based) radiant floor systems often find difficult to operate.
Since Legalett is also a Frost Protected Shallow Foundation (FPSF) deep earth excavation is not necessary, so damage to the roots of mature trees is eliminated. Legalett heating can also take advantage of off-peak hour electrical charges by storing heat in the slab during the times that energy costs the least.
Legalett’s specifiers guide makes it easy to include a frost protected shallow foundation into any design project.

The Barrier and BarrierXT are the first products to be specifically designed for use as an underconcrete insulation and vapor barrier for ICF buildings and radiantly heated floors. They are made with a (3/8" or 3/4" thick) unique flexible extruded expanded polystyrene core with vapor-proof film laminated to both sides in 4’ x 60’ rolls.
